The new smartphone, Xiaomi Mi5 made an appearance at the MWC 2016 Trade Show and got all our attention with an extremely beautiful design and a price as low as $305. The latest sensation from the company brings flagship features and strikes the low and mid-end segment, something which has been solely dominated by OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X.Having that said, it will be interesting to see how far Xiaomi goes in taking the likes of renowned mid-range players in the Indian market. The company is already having a dream in India and, with Mi5 in the game, it will be real treat for tech-buffs looking for bang for buck deals. Here’s what Xiaomi Mi5 has on offer for you!Stunning Form-factorThe design language of Xiaomi Mi5 looks highly inspired from Galaxy S6 and S7. The device flaunts a nice and clean look and bears Gorilla Glass 4 on the on both ends with a metal band running along the sides. Its glass back curves to the side just like Galaxy S7 and adds a touch of comfort for lifting the device from a flat surface. Plus, the front-panel features capacitive touch buttons with an elongated home-button, which comes integrated with a fingerprint scanner. In our opinion, the look and form-factor of Xiaomi Mi5 is nothing less than a premium flagship. It fits nicely in one hand, feels pretty solid, and gives a great look with curved back and small bezels.DisplayThe display bundled with Xiaomi Mi5 is fairly impressive. The device sports a 5.1-inch full-HD IPS display that stands out in the category and offers a picture-perfect visual experience which is nearly at par with flagships phones. Instead of going high on the spec sheet and affecting the element of pricing, Xiaomi laid low against the likes of Galaxy S7 and LG G5. It creates nice impression with 428 pixels per inch, and offers a nice ecosystem for watching movies and playing games with fine details and adequate colour rendering.Plus, it also worth noting that the display of Mi5 is battery friendly, and will not eat up all your juice while watching movies or playing games.Hardware and PerformanceOn the hardware side, Xiaomi has given the latest and most powerful processor from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 820 with a whopping 3GB of RAM. The Pro edition of the handset comes with 4GB, but for those who’re looking for a seamless gaming and multi-tasking experience, 3GB will also do just fine. The Snapdragon 820 chipset features four “Kryo” cores, two of which run at a 2.2GHz for heavy multi-tasking, while the other two run at 1.5GHz for medium and light processes. It packs a strong punch against high-end players, and handles heavy tasks quite nicely. In fact, throughout our testing phase, we did not see any lag or thermal issue on this device, even while switching between apps or playing games for long-hours. It delivered the performance we expect from a moderately price phone with heavy specifications. And, as for storage, Xiaomi Mi5 incorporates 128 gigs of inbuilt memory for seamless work and play. There’s still no support for expansion via microSD card.SoftwareJust like all other flagships that made an appearance at MWC 2016, MI5 also runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the box. This is the first handset from the Chinese giant which runs the latest Android OS out-of-the box, and offers the best of MIUI with a bunch of tweaks and customization options.Despite running the latest Android OS, the custom-skin form Xiaomi, MIUI 7 looks nothing like new or upgraded. It is the same skin that we have on other Xiaomi phones including some of those which date back to Android 4.4 KitKat. So, the point is, you’ll get Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but you’ll not get all under-the-hood improvements that come with it. MIUI 7 will take away many improvements including an app-drawer and a bunch of other features.Camera PerformanceThe camera bundled with Xiaomi Mi5 looks nice and snappy, especially for 305 bucks. The dual-SIM based device features a 16-megapixel rear autofocus shooter with f/2.0 aperture, four-axis optical image stabilization, phase-detection autofocus, deep trench isolation, and dual-tone LED flash. It promises a flagship level photography experience, and also includes support for capturing 4k videos at 30fps.On the other side, the front-facing camera of the handset bears a 4-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 2µm pixel size. It compliments Xiaomi’s terrific work in the camera department and offers vibrant and colour-rich selfies even in low-light conditions.ConnectivityXiaomi Mi5 sports dual-SIM card slots with basic connectivity options such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, NFC, 3G HSPA+ and 4G LTE. It bears a fingerprint scanner for advanced bio-metric security and also includes Type-C 1.0 reversible connector for seamless charging and data transfer from either end of the cable. On 4G, the download and upload speed from the handset goes up to 150Mbps and 50Mbps.Battery Making things better for non-stop gaming and multi-tasking, Xiaomi has paired a 3000 mAh non-removable battery with Mi5. The dual-SIM based handset delivers enormous power for seamless work and play, and takes a dig against high-end flagships with long-lasting performance. It makes an ideal package for on-the-go users, and stands out in the category with Quick Charge 3.0 tech that charges the phone up to 83% just within 30 minutes. To sum up, you get a big battery and fast charging with the new Mi5.Bottom-lineXiaomi Mi5 makes an ideal mid-end package for budget phone lovers. The handset has already created a big-buzz in the Chinese market, and offering a picture-perfect deal at a price like no other. If this device comes at a price under 20k in India, it will be one of the finest smartphone launches of the year, even better than Galaxy S7 and iPhone 5se!
