re:Invent 2016 – AWS Provides More Compute Options to Support Wider Workloads. CEO Andy Jassy says that AWS’s “superpower” is its speed in innovation. Jassy spoke Wednesday at the AWS re-Invent keynote in Las Vegas. The event was attended by 32,000 people and streamed live by an additional 50,000 viewers around the world. Jassy stated that the cloud platform is set to add over 1,000 new capabilities and services by the end of this year. Jassy’s keynote revealed many of these, including a slew new Elastic Compute Cloud instances (EC2) to support a wider range workloads. AWS has expanded its T2 general-purpose, burstable instances lineup with the new t2.xlarge (both generally available). The t2.xlarge supports 16 GiB memory and four virtual CPUs (vCPUs), while t2.2xlarge supports 32 GiB memory and 8 vCPUs. The new memory-optimized R4 family of instances is also available. These instances include the r4.large, which has 15.25 GiB memory and two CPUs, and the r4.16xlarge with 488 GiB of memory (and 64 vCPUs). The R4 instances run on Intel’s Broadwell processors and have twice as much memory and speed as the R3 instances. They are optimized for BI, database, and in-memory cache applications. EC2 Elastic GPUs are currently in preview. These allow users to add GPU memory to existing instances — anywhere from 1 GiB up to 8 GiB. This is ideal for heavy workloads such as industrial design or 3-D modeling. Jassy stated that it is extremely useful if you only need a small amount of GPU, but not enough instances. Jassy also revealed the developer preview of new F1 instances that feature field-programmable arrays (FPGAs). Jassy stated that F1 instances are designed for workloads that require hardware acceleration, such as financial analysis and genomics. There are currently two F1 instances: the f1.2xlarge, which has one FPGA and eight vCPUs with 122 GiB memory, and the f1.16xlarge, which has eight FPGAs, 64 CPUs and 976 Gb of memory. AWS will also release an FPGA developer Amazon Machine Image and an F1 hardware developer kit (HDK) in addition to the F1 instance preview. Jassy stated that the F1 instances will be made available to all “in the coming week”. AWS has two new instance types in the pipeline for the first quarter 2017: the I3, which is for I/O-intensive workloads, as well as the C5, which is based on Intel Skylake processors and is optimized for compute-optimized workloads. Al Hilwa, IDC Program Director, said that the new EC2 instances reflect a sharpening emphasis on machine learning and “streaming computes.” Hilwa stated in a research note that developers will be happier having a slice of GPU than paying for it every time they use it. FPGA instances will be used for highly customized computation workloads that use floating point numbers. Gaming and other testing applications are the most prominent examples. However, the main change compared to a few years ago is the rise in image, video, and audio stream processing. This is often done in the context preparing data for machine-learning. re:Invent 2016 – Amazon Hones APN to Benefit Partners That Specialize in Amazon Web Services (AWS). This week’s re:Invent conference was held in Las Vegas. There were several announcements aimed towards helping partners with more specialized technical practices or focus areas. Tuesday’s Global Partner Summit keynote saw the company announce the launch of the new Public Sector Program and Service Delivery Program. A searchable partner directory, AWS Partner Solutions Finder, was also announced. All three programs are available to AWS Partner Network (APN) members who meet the qualifications. The AWS Public Sector Program, as its name suggests, is designed specifically for partners whose practices are geared towards the government, education, or nonprofit sectors. AWS’ public sector marketing and sales teams are available to partners who sign up for the program. APN Marketing Central offers public sector-focused marketing resources to partners. Partners who are authorized to promote the Public Sector Program solutions can also use the Partner Solutions Finder to help customers search for partners based upon specific industries, use cases, and technical focus. Partners can differentiate themselves further by being eligible for one or more categories under the broader Public Sector Program umbrella.

Authorized Government Reseller Program: APN Consulting Partners who are qualified for reselling their services to the public sector. AWS GovCloud (U.S. Service Delivery Program): APN Consulting Partners and APN Technology Partners who have demonstrated expertise in working alongside AWS GovCloud customers. AWS Government Competency Programme: APN Advanced Tier Partners who have the expertise to work…

re:Invent 2016 – Amazon Athena Enables Serverless MySQL Queries of S3 Data Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), today announced Amazon Athena. This allows serverless queries of large amounts of data stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service, (Amazon S3). This bypasses standard Big Data processes like spinning up Hadoop clusters. Customers can point Amazon Athena to their Amazon S3 data and use standard SQL to run queries and get answers in seconds with just a few clicks in AWS Management Console. Amazon Athena is free from infrastructure to set up or manage, clusters to tune, and no infrastructure to maintain. Customers pay only for the queries they run. Amazon Athena promises to make it easier to query petabyte-scale data stored as standard data formats like log files, CSV, JSON, Apache ORC, and Apache Parquet. It does not require the use of standard Big Data tools, primarily from the Apache Software Foundation ecosystem like Spark, Hive, Pig, and Hadoop. However, its underlying architecture is based upon the Presto distributed SQL engine, an Apache project. AWS spokesperson Jeff Barr stated that Athena has an interactive query editor to make it as easy as possible. Your queries can be expressed in standard ANSI SQL, and can include JOINs and window functions. You can execute your queries from either the AWS Management console or a SQL client like SQL Workbench. Amazon QuickSight can also be used to visualize your data. You can also download the Athena JDBC driver to run queries from your favorite Business Intelligence software. AWS FAQ provides more information about the product, including which use cases are best suited to Athena. This includes details on how Athena compares to other Big Data services like Amazon Redshift or more complex data processing frameworks like Amazon EMR. Snowflake Computing CEO Bob Muglia stated that AWS Athena’s announcement is a further confirmation of the growing demand for cloud data processing. “In fact, data processing has become one the most important workloads in cloud computing. Customers demand fast, flexible, and simple ways to store, access, and analyze cloud data to help them achieve business goals. Barr stated that Athena is currently only available in the US East (Northern Virginia), and US West (Oregon) areas, but will be available in other regions in the coming months. He also stated that Athena is only available for the queries you run. The amount of data scanned by each query is what you pay. This information will be displayed after each query. This allows you to make significant cost savings by compressing or partitioning your data, or converting it to a columnar format. More information at re:Invent 2016.

Cybersecurity Analyst x Pentester

Security professionals are responsible for protecting information assets within an organization. They typically view their responsibilities in three areas: confidentiality, integrity, availability (CIA). The adversaries/attackers, seeking to disrupt an organization’s security, have three corresponding goals in mind: disclosure, alteration, and denial (DAD). These models are also known as the DAD Figure-1 triads or the CIA.…
